about

"From The Vaults" is a collection of tracks that I have recorded in my home studio from my very early days, right up until the late 90s and early 2000's. I have been a home studio enthusiast and songwriter for as long back as I can remember. Over the decades, I have amassed hundreds of recordings of my songs. Some of these were released, but the majority of them have never been heard before.

I plan to do a few volumes of this series. I think there will be at least 3 or 4 volumes, possibly more. I even have some live recordings that I may eventually release. This collection is comprised of demos, non-album tracks, experimental stuff and songs that for whatever reason simply never saw the light of day. I am proud of all these songs. Like many songwriters say, songs are like your children. You love them all.

Most of these songs were recorded with my primary trio of synthesizers that I used throughout the 90s and beyond. This includes the Korg Poly 800, the Mini Korg 700 and the Yamaha DX 100, all of which I bought second hand. Also, my good old drum machine the Boss DR 550 Mark II appears in about 80% of these tracks.

Some of these songs were recorded on reel to reel. I used a big old Roberts reel to reel, as well as a simple little Sears model (which was a two track recorder). Later I got my hands on a Fostex X18 4 track cassette recorder, which was my workhorse for a solid ten years, before I moved into digital.

Most of these songs were recorded very modestly, under the most primitive of conditions. My bedroom studio was tiny, cluttered and claustrophobic (it still is) and much of my gear was very dog-eared and shop worn. But I did the best with what I had. Many of these tracks have that famous hiss that was one of the hallmarks of recording on cassette. I thought about mastering the songs, but then I thought no, I wanted the tracks to sound just as they did 30 years ago. I wasn't interested in dressing things up and trying to make them sound "pretty". It was the raw nature of these recordings that I always loved, and I wanted to preserve that.

I hope you enjoy all of these tracks. I am not sure when the next volume will be released, but please stay tuned. And please be sure to read the comments I have written about each individual song.
